Geologist

Born in Santa Teresa Gallura (OT) in 1966, Domenico Poggi graduated in Geological Sciences in 1992 from the Sapienza University in Rome, with a thesis on the Portico d’Ottavia (‘Study on the materials and their forms and products of deterioration’).

Qualified to practice as a geologist since 1994, he has been enrolled in the register of geologists of Lazio since 1996 (n.1098). In the 1992-1995 for-year period he participated in the Risk Map of Cultural Heritage project (http://www.aec2000.eu/riskmap/italian.htm): first level filing, together with architects, archaeologists and art historians; second level filing and monitoring (study of stone materials, environmental pollution control, climate control).

Since 1996 he has worked as a freelancer, mainly in the field of cultural heritage. Since 2000 he is the scientific director of Artelab s.r.l., a company dealing with non-structural diagnostics on stone and lithoid materials and their alterations. In collaboration with other professionals (Biologists, Engineers, etc.), the company deals with in situ and laboratory investigations in the fields of architectural, archaeological and pictorial restoration. Among the fields of activity: characterization and study of mortars, plasters, color layers, wall and easel paintings, stone materials (marble, stone, ‘earths’), ceramic bodies; ‘humidity’; soluble salts; identification and control of bio-deteriogens; evaluation of the effectiveness of consolidation and protection treatments on stone materials.

For over twenty years he has collaborated with the ISCR, also in international projects; co-author of about 20 scientific articles, since 2015 he has a teaching module (“Surface diagnostics on materials of cultural heritage”) as part of the “Second level Master in Architectural Restoration and Heritage Culture” of the Roma Tre University. Since 2017 he has held a seminar on mortars as part of the “Conservation of materials and applied chemistry” course conducted by Prof. L. Pandolfi and MG Filetici (Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Architecture, School of Specialization in Architectural Heritage and Landscape for the Study and Restoration of Monuments).
